Old Trucks to Hang Around a Bit Longer, Extension passed

Governments have often felt the need to regulate certain industries in order to keep them from adding more pollution than necessary to the environment. With automobile emissions being one of the most well known contributors, trucking companies have been no stranger to regulation.

A ruling has already come down from the California Air Resources Board requiring trucking companies to have their vehicles with a level 3 retrofit and at least a 25% NOx reduction. However, undoubtedly in light of the recent economic downturn, the Port of Los Angeles and Long Beach have gotten amendments passed to their tariffs which give trucking companies a little more time to become compliant.

Freight service has suffered through the recent economic difficulties just like any other business. While every driver most likely wants to be compliant, right now it may be difficult in order to become so. With the amendment they now have till April 30th of the net year in order to do so. The previous cutoff date to become compliant was the first of the year.

The NOx reduction is necessary to insure that a trucking company’s fleet will be in compliance with the San Pedro Bay requirements as well.

"We have worked closely with the Air Resources Board and the South Coast Air Quality Management District in recent months to get as much funding for new trucks into the hands of truck owners as we can," said John Holmes, deputy executive director of operations for the Port of Los Angeles. "These tariff ban extensions will allow time for the trucks to be delivered."

For the time being at least trucking companies can continue using the same old trucks.
