I came across a news piece recently that talked about the new I-Shift, Volvo Trucks that has turned the spotlight on the transmission on the international truck stage. Truck drivers can’t stop talking about it! Never before has a transmission received such a positive response from drivers and transport companies all over the world. Today 60 per cent of all Volvo FH trucks are sold with I-Shift and it is standard in the world’s most powerful series production truck, the Volvo FH16 700 hp. Sven-Erik Tibb, chief project manager for the development, talks about it in detail on Freight News.
The project having starting in the end of 1998, involved extensive research, in-depth analysis and alot of hard work that paid off in the end. With more and more improved systems being used to control both the engine and the rest of the truck, it became the natural next-step to create these new opportunities to develop an electronically controlled transmission. According to Tibb, the I-Shift's predecessor, Geartronic, was not an optimized solution and an automatic transmission was needed to enhance driver comfort and driving ease. Therefore, it became obvious that there is a high demand for a new transmission?
Today, this has revolutionized things and made work comfortable for the trucking industry and heavy haulers. It is good to see that this is indeed a prospering industry with constant development, enhancements and growth by the day.
